Audubon Insectarium Wall 3 detail 1
Shown:
Geologic period: Modern
From the earliest of times, insects have had important jobs developing, proliferating and serving as a catalyst for the survival and evolution of our ecosystem. With a vision that started more than a decade ago, Audubon Nature Institute saw merit in paying tribute to the largest group of animals on the planet, narrating New Orleans history from a truly unique vantage point and complementing its family of nature-themed attractions, including Audubon Zoo and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas. In Audubon Insectarium, insects of all shapes, sizes and species, from New Orleans to Nairobi and many points in between, have a world-class residence from which to entice locals and visitors alike.
Underscoring the importance of insects and their world, Audubon Insectarium found its new address on Canal Street at the historically significant U.S. Custom House in downtown New Orleans. Transforming part of a federal building into a unique museum space was a prolonged but genuine labor of love for the designers, artisans, animal staff and corporate leaders who combined efforts to bring the dream of an 'insect temple' to its end result.
